What size cake will I need?

  • Posted on August 30, 2008 at 8:51 pm

The easy, but not very helpful, answer is that “it depends”.  Obviously, the type of cake and the other food being served may affect the sizing, however, as a rule of thumb, the following table gives an idea:

Size (cm/Inches) Sponge or Chocolate Fruit
Round Square Round Square
13cm / 5″ 7 8 14 16
15cm / 6″ 11 14 22 27
18cm/ 7″ 15 20 30
40
20cm / 8″ 20
27 40 54
23cm / 9″ 27 35 54
70
25cm / 10″ 34 45 70 90
28cm / 11″ 43 56 86 112
30cm / 12″ 50 70 100 134

What happens when I contact you?

  • Posted on August 29, 2008 at 10:06 pm

Everyone is different.  Some clients know exactly what they want.  Some have a rough idea but want pointers and help.  Others want lots of suggestions and advice (often not just about cakes!).

In the end, everyone wants to have the confidence that comes from working with a trusted pair of hands.

Initially, we’ll set up a very informal chat (at my house, or wherever is most convienient/comfortable for you), which is completely no-obligation and free.  We can discuss your requirements and I can sketch out some designs and suggestions.  If you already have some pictures of cakes which you like, feel free to bring them along!

If you like my ideas (and I hope you will) we take the planning and arrangements further.

My phone number and email are shown at the top of the page.

Do you work in my area?

  • Posted on August 29, 2008 at 9:47 pm

I am based in Berkshire but have completed commissions in many parts of the country including London.  Some cakes do not travel particularly well, so if your venue is more than around 1½ hour from Reading, it is probably best to contact me to see if it is feasible.

As with all my work, I am flexible and will do my best to accomodate all requirements.

Bratz in a cake birthday cake

  • Posted on August 25, 2008 at 9:24 am

Bratz Birthday cake This is a super and original cake for a Bratz mad little girl.  Going with the look of the doll I created a cake that would suit her possible choice of career!  I made an outfit for her and she looks like she has just lept from the cake and is about to entertain.  She is surrounded by sugar and springs and a keepsake plaque piped with your own personal message.

This is a large cake to feed up to 50+ people, but could be scaled down and still have the same effect.

This cake comes complete with a Bratz doll to keep and play for later.

There are chocolate painted explosion balls and hand painted butterflies, a sugar plaque to keep forever and matching trim.

This cake was made in rich dark chocolate, triple layer, filled with whipped dark chocolate butter cream and finished in a white fondant icing with lots of cake sparkles!

Lion Christening cake

  • Posted on August 25, 2008 at 8:56 am

This cake originally arrived as a beautifully decorated, frozen, rich fruit wedding cake.  It was stripped, fed with quality brandy, matured, coated with marzipan, iced and decorated for a little boy’s Christening.

The cake was lightly shaded and the individual sugar pieces cut and hand painted to offer an individual and attractive cake to form the focus of such an important event.

I am happy to remodel your wedding cake for a Christening, or naming ceremony or I can offer a generously made fruit cake, moist and rich, matured with quality brandy and iced with natural marzipan and either royal (hard) or fondant (soft) icing.

Rabbit birthday cake – your child’s favourite toy on their cake!

  • Posted on August 25, 2008 at 8:43 am

This is a smart cake for a little boy or girl.  Plain and simple, but with a special feature – the little person’s special toy, a rabbit in this case, modelled and presented on a pastillage plaque, decorated with birthday ribbons to keep for many years to come. The delight when Patrick saw his ‘Fiver’ on his birthday cake was wonderful to see, really touching!

This cake was chocolate triple layer with light chocolate butter cream and covered in white fondant, finished with a hand painted plaque and cake sparkles.  This cake would feed 20-25 people.

Birthday or wedding Cupcakes

  • Posted on August 25, 2008 at 8:34 am

These beautiful cupcakes were made for a special 21st birthday.  The colour theme of the party was brights, orange, lime green and yellow and the birthday girl loves chocolate!  She wanted cupcakes but also wanted a stunning display and for the cakes to really stand out and make a feature.

There were 45 cakes in all, 22 in milk chocolate, light and moist, decorated with a generous swirl of fresh milk chocolate ganache, drizzled with white Belgian chocolate and finished with hand made blossoms in yellow, green and orange. Making up the paler side were 23 white chocolate cup cakes, light and full of flavour, topped with a swirl of white chocolate ganache, drizzled with Belgian Milk chocolate and finished with matching blossoms in yellow, green and orange.  I made 2 of the cakes with super large ganache, one to show off the pretty hand piped sugar plaque and the other for the candle!

I made a special stand for the cakes with matching fondant, pillars and co ordinating ribbon and trim, all topped off with some fabulous cake sparkles.  Each cake will serve 1-2 people and could be offered as a desert or with coffee.

Barbie Princess birthday cake

  • Posted on August 3, 2008 at 9:11 am

This is a beautiful Barbie Birthday cake, for a princess mad little girl.  The Barbie is real, but her dress and clothes are all hand made, dusted and painted to give a look of real luxury and to lift a pretty Barbie doll to Princess Barbie!  She is standing on a further cake to feed more people and let the train of her dress flow to the floor.  The dress skirt and cake would feed around 30 people.  If you prefer she could stand directly on the board and her skirt alone would feed around 15 people.

You could have any sponge cake flavour you wish, chocolate, vanilla or even pink!

Rabbit Christening cake

  • Posted on August 3, 2008 at 9:05 am

This cake was to celebrate a little boy’s Christening, but would work equally well in pink.  The handmade, painted and piped frame can hold your own message or maybe a favourite quote.  This cake would feed around 50-60 people as desert or up to 80 if served with coffee.  A smaller version would be possible.

This cake was a triple layer chocolate cake generously filled and coated with whipped chocolate butter cream and finished with white fondant icing.  All the decorations were edible, or could be kept in a box for many years.

Strawberry and white chocolate birthday cake

  • Posted on August 3, 2008 at 8:59 am

This is a super strawberry and white chocolate summer birthday cake.  It is made with real Belgian white chocolate both in the sponge and as a cream ganache for the filling, coating and decoration.  It is triple layer, each filled generously with ganache, a dash of brandy and ‘extra’ strawberry jam.  Around the outside are white chocolate curls and on the top is rich, creamy, smooth ganache.

An incredibly indulgent cake for a special Summer birthday party.  This cake was made for around 30-40 people as it is very rich, only a small portion is more than enough!

Summer Garden Wedding Anniversary cake

  • Posted on August 3, 2008 at 8:54 am

I made this exquisite cake for a couple who love their garden, but it would work equally well as a birthday or retirement cake.  I made a vegetable garden on the left and a flowerbed on the right with garlands of glorious roses climbing on the ropes and over the seat on the lawn.  All this, centered around a pond with real effect water and goldfish swimming in its clear waters.

This cake was a double layer Madagascan vanilla cake filled with ‘extra’ jam and light whipped vanilla butter cream, finished in fondant and piped with royal icing.

This cake was a light chocolate cake, triple layer, generously filled and coated with whipped chocolate butter cream and fondant icing.

Autumn birthday cake

  • Posted on August 1, 2008 at 8:51 am

Detail of Autumn cakeThis is an Autumn inspired birthday cake, but would work equally well as an Autumn wedding cake.  It has many different leaves, berries and acorns, all handmade in sugar, all edible and together they make a stunning effect.  Around the sides are fine filigree sugar pieces, hand painted with dust to give them a subtle sheen and topped with a sugar blackberry, round, shiny and juicy.

This cake was a dark chocolate cake, triple layer, filled with whipped chocolate butter cream, made with real chocolate and finished in white fondant icing.  It has a personalised hand piped and painted plaque with the birthday girl’s name and age (optional!)

Balloons birthday cake

Detail of top of Balloon Birthday cakeThis is a beautiful birthday cake for a boy or girl.  This one is made of light Madagascan vanilla sponge with luxury jam and whipped butter cream filling.  I have used bright colours for the balloons, but it would work just as well with pastel colours and pink icing on the banner.

I made this one for a first birthday and put a scene in the four seasons colours around the side to show the year that the little person had enjoyed so far!
